Why is it Necessary to Crown a Tooth?

Posted on 30 January 2026

Have you ever wondered why your dentist has recommended you restore a tooth with a crown? Here are some common reasons for crowning a tooth!

1. After Root Canal Therapy - after a root canal, the tooth becomes very brittle and weak so crowning a root canaled tooth is important to avoid fractures and for strength and longevity.

2. Large Fillings - if the cavity is very large, a filling may not be suffice for long-term reinforcement of the tooth, sometimes a crown is the best way to maintain remaining tooth structure.

3. Worn-down Teeth - if you suffer from bruxism - your teeth can become so worn down that the best option for restoration would be a dental crown.

4 Cosmetic reasons - discolouration or misshapen teeth can be improved with crowns!
